How do I Start to Broadcast If you have a camera connected to your PC and would like to join simply click Start Broadcasting.

Depending on whether you are already logged in or not you will either start broadcasting immediately or you will be asked to create an account by picking a username and a password.

After that you will be sent to your homepage to begin broadcasting. If the broadcast does not start immediately it is possible that you will have to give the flash application permission to use your webcam.

To do that right-click inside the video window, choose 'settings' and 'enable' the webcam access.

After that your broadcast should begin.

Why can't I get any video / audio on my page? Probably you have not given the flash application permission to access the microphone. To remedy this, hover with your mouse over the video, right-click your mouse and choose 'settings', then enable access to your webcam and microphone. If you want this to work automatically next time you log in then you have to check 'remember' as well. On our computer it looks like this, first select the settings dialog by clicking on the window for the video:

Then, a second level appears:

Here you have to click the 'allow' button and the 'remember' checkbox. Then, at the bottom row, the four little tabs, you select the 'microphone' icon, this brings up:

Select the right audio input, and then click the 'webcam' icon, which brings up:

Here you have to select the right video input.
Special note for Mac users with a built in iSight cam, the video type to select is 'USB class video'.

To view cam or broadcast you have to have flash installed.

How do I find my webcam page on ww.com ? Your webcam page url is http://ww.com/nickname where nickname is the name you chose to log in. If you are logged in at the top right of the screen, next to the 'logout' link, there is a link with your nickname on it that will take you to your homepage directly.

The 'start broadcast' link will do the same, only it will immediately start your webcam broadcast.

Lost Text and HTML code on your Camarades page If your recently updated your Camarades page and your HTML input vanished when you submitted the form, this is why:

Some people abuse the Camarades system by putting freaky javascripts and other types of scripts on their page. Though there is nothing wrong with most scripts, some cause browser crashes, ten's of pop-ups, redirects, security issues, conflicts with the webcam script etc.

Since Camarades has received many complaints about users who do this, we now filter out any type of script from the Camarades user pages.

We realise that some people may now have problems adding couters, ICQ staus bars etc. and this is unfortunate. Make sure that your input does not contain any JavaScript or even (the word) "script" and in general, you'll be fine.

We highly recommend making a back up of your html in notepad just in case you inadvertently loose your text during an update.

What is the Archive and how can I use it The pic gallery is an archive of all the "photos" taken of your webcam by you and other viewers.

Here is how to add pics to your archive.

  • open a browser and your Webcam software
  • go to view homepage in your Webcam software
  • Smile big for the camera and click on the "postcards" tab in the toolbar below your video. That will capture the image.
  • fill in the form and click send.

The image is then saved in your archives and a copy is sent to the email address you specified on the form.

Here is how to see all the pics taken of your webcam.

  • Go to your homepage and click on toolbar icon with the little pink person (usually closer to the left on the toolbar).

To edit the pics in your archive:

  • enter through your webcam software and go into edit homepage
  • click on Archive Review and there you can decide which stay and which don't.

You can also disable the Archive function by deselecting the Archive checkbox found in "Page design".

Please allow some time for your pictures to actually show up via your page as Camarades reviews the pictures first to avoid indecent material from getting into general Camarades areas. If you are waiting more than a few days for your pics to be reviewed, please contact Camarades

  • Tips for promoting your Webcam Page If you are looking for ways to get more people to visit your camarades page, here are a few pointers to help you get started:
    1. Try broadcasting interesting video, people do not tend to return to cams showing a still image
    2. Tag your cam with keywords that describe the video
    3. Tell your friends about your webcam page, using Twitter, Facebook and Myspace.

Some webcams don't seem to 'stream' like they should. Can I make them go faster? How? If you are using a proxy server, disable it.

The speed at which webcams operate is highly dependent on the connection on the sending and the receiving side, our servers have plenty of capacit, so they are rarely the bottle-neck.

If you have issues with a particular webcam then most likely that cam is on a very narrow connection to the internet.

How do I remove/delete my page? To remove your page, all you would need to do is remove the information from your page. Click the Edit Homepage button and click on Page Design. Backspace all the information you see there. Hit the Save and Continue button, doing the same for the next 2 pages. On the 'About You page', be sure to uncheck the checkbox towards the top. =) ID numbers cannot be removed from the server, but without having your private information on the page, it shouldnt be of any bother to you. =)

HTML Tips: Introduction The examples provided in the next few FAQ's are to show you how to "dress up" your Camarades page. These are pretty much the basics of HTML, and should be enough to get ya started. =) For more insight into HTML, there's a book available (called "HTML for Dummies") that helps quite a bit! It ranges from the very basic beginner's tutorials, to the more advanced. I suggest checking it out! =) PS: I highly recommend reading all the HTML Tips FAQ's, *in order* just so ya know what's going on. =) You can find the rest of these tips by doing a search in the FAQ for "HTML Tips".

    (Category: Your Camarades page)

HTML Tips #1: Adding Bold/Italic/Underlined/Strikethrough Text The instructions here will show you how to dress up your Camarades page, by way of putting emphasis on or giving more notice to words on your page.

First, a little more understanding into how these "HTML Tags" work. Each set of tags is marked by a beginning tag, and an ending tag, that marks where the the bold/italic/underlined/strikethrough text wil start and stop. =) You can also combine tags to, for example, make certain text appear both italic and bold! =)

    Here's how you'd do it:
To make bold text, you would type it something like this: <b>bold text</b> - Always remember that the "closing" tag has a slash / in it.
Making only part of a sentence bold, would appear like this: This is the <b>bold text</b> of the sentence.

It's that simple! You can do the same for italic, underlined and strikethrough text simply by replacing the letter "b" that appears above, with different letters, like this:
    <i>italic text</i>
    <u>underlined text</u>
    <s>strikethrough text</s>

You can combine tags by using for example, <b><i>bold & italic text</i></b>. The important think here, is to *REVERSE* the closing tag sequence. The first starting tag you use (in this example, was <b>) should always be the last closing tag. =)

HTML Tips #2: Adding Pictures/Images to your Cam Page If you've read these HTML Tips in order, then you'll know what I mean when I say that the HTML tag used to place an image on your page doesn't need an opening and closing tag. First things first. You can't upload images to your Camarades page. These pictures will need to be "linked" to from another website. Make sure you link pictures from your OWN website and not someone else's. They might not like it too much. =)

An example of this would be simply: <IMG SRC="http://www.mywebsite.com/mywebpage/mypic.gif"> - The text in red would be replaced with the FULL URL to your picture. This is just the simple version of placing an image on your page. Want more control over it? You can also set the image to appear as a certain size to your viewers. This would be done like so: <IMG SRC="http://www.mywebsite.com/mywebpage/mypic.gif" HEIGHT="100" WIDTH="100"> - Notice the blue text. This will show your picture in the viewer's web browser as 100 by 100 pixels, no matter what size the picture actually is! Keep in mind though, if you have a very LARGE picture and you set it to show up really small in the web browser, the viewer will still be downloading a very large picture! The HEIGHT and WIDTH markers don't actually "shrink" the picture, it only makes it appear to be shrunken. =)

HTML Tips #3: Adding Hyperlinks to your Cam Page There are two ways to make a link on your Camarades page. A simple text link, or using a picture as a link. For now, we'll discuss making text links. This procedure is actually more simple than you would think. =) If you read the HTML Tip about bold/italic/underlined/strikethrough text, you'll understand that a Hyperlink also uses a beginning and closing tag. Here would be an example of a text link.

<A HREF="http://www.mywebsite.com/mywebpage/">The text of the link</A> - In this example, http://www.mywebsite.com/mywebpage/ would be replaced with the URL (Website Address) to your homepage, or wherever you'd like a link to point to. The text that appears in this example in blue specifies the text that will appear on your page as the link (ya can't miss it, it'll be blue and underlined when you're finished!) =) Here's another little trick with links:

Lets say you want the link to open in a new window. No problem! Here's the same example above, but with a twist:
<A HREF="http://www.mywebsite.com/mywebpage/" target="other">The text of the link</A> - Now you'll notice the black text that was inserted. Remember to include the space before the word "target". =)

    (Category: Your Camarades page)

HTML Tips #4: Left Align/Right Align/Centering Text or Images
Really simple! By default, the text or images will be aligned to the left side of the browser window, until you specify otherwise. To specify otherwise, you would first figure out where in the text you would want it to be altered, and find the end of it. These HTML Tags use starting and closing tags (explained in previous HTML Tips). Use the tags below to change it. =)

To align text to the left: Do nothing. By default, it's aligned to the left.
    To center the text:
This text will appear in the center of your page

To align text to the right:

This text will appear on the right side of the browser window.

The closing tags used in this example will simply restore the text to the previous alignment, NOT put it back to left-aligned, unless that WAS the previous alignment. Confusing? Okay, example:

This text is aligned to the left.

This text appears in the center, but notice I'm not using a closing "center" tag.

This text appears on the right, and I'll use the closing right-align tag

Which puts me back to the center of the page.

And now back to the left side. =)

HTML Tips #5: Creating Hyperlinks Using Pictures
You can also use pictures as hyperlinks. Remember that the <A HREF tag for the hyperlink uses an opening and closing tag, but the <IMG SRC for placing a picture did not. You'll notice this in the example below:

    <A HREF="http://mywebsite.com/"><IMG SRC="http://mywebsite.com/banner.jpg" border="0"></A>
The text in blue indicates the starting and closing tags that make a hyperlink. The text in red marks where the picture is placed. Since the picture is placed in between the starting and closing tags of the hyperlink, it will be turned into a hyperlink. =) Also notice the border="0" that I added. This stops that ugly blue border from appearing around the picture! But, if you happen to like that blue border, leave that little part out. =)

HTML Tips #6: Placing a Background Image on your Cam Page So, you don't like plain colors on the background of your page huh? Neither do I. =)

For a simple background color change set the 'background' field of your page to a color value (to go to the page editor click 'settings' from the webcam software).

If you wish to use an image then you can put the url of the image you want to use in the background field.

The webcam does not start broadcasting To use your webcam on ww.com you need to have the following:
  • a usb attached video device or a built in webcam
  • a modern browser, such as Firefox, Mozilla, Internet Explorer
  • Adobe 'flash' installed and working
After clicking the 'start broadcast' link you go to your hompage and the broadcast will attempt to start, if it does not work the most common cause is that 'flash' does not have permission to access your webcam.
To remedy that you must move your mouse over the video area of the flash application, 'right-click' with the mouse, choose 'settings' and then enable the webcam and remember the setting. If you want to transmit audio along with your video you have to enable access to the microphone as well.
After doing this the broadcast should start normally.
If it *still* doesn't work there are a number of possible causes:
  • some other program (such as skype, netmeeting or our old software) is using the webcam
  • there is a problem with the driver of your webcam, possibly in combination with flash, consider upgrading the driver, flash or both
